Another C’est la Vie in France related to religion. After Charlie Hebdo burned out by petrol bomb attack two weeks ago, now (although it happened last month) this is about Catholic fundamentalists gathering outside a Parisian theatre, to protest against a play featuring the face of Christ allegedly covered with fake excrement.

For the past week, throngs of Catholic fundamentalists have been brandishing crosses, chanting in Latin, and dropping to their knees in prayer outside a popular Parisian theatre to protest against a play featuring the face of Christ allegedly covered with fake excrement. The work in question, Italian Romeo Castellucci’s “On the Concept of the Face, Regarding the Son of God”, is about an incontinent man being cared for by his son, and has been showing at the Theatre de la Ville (near the Notre Dame Cathedral). Outraged by what they consider blasphemy and “Christianophobia”, over a thousand protesters (and up to 5,000, according to protest organisers) gathered on Saturday in front of the theatre, hurling eggs and oil at the building and theatre-goers entering it. Two days earlier, police arrested 20 people for breaking into a performance of the play and planting stink bombs.

Religion is always a sensitive subject. Can we say everything about any religion? Is it considered blasphemy? Some would say it is about freedom and/of creativity/speech. Needless to say everyone won’t agree on the question anytime soon…
