The massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake that shook Japan and triggered a powerful tsunami on Friday has had a profound effect on both the surrounding terrain and the planet as a whole. Radioactive Releases in Japan Could Last Months, Experts Say
As the scale of Japan’s nuclear crisis begins to come to light, experts in Japan and the United States say the country is now facing a cascade of accumulating problems that suggest that radioactive releases of steam from the crippled plants could go on for weeks or even months. The emergency flooding of two stricken reactors with seawater and the resulting steam releases are a desperate step intended to avoid a much bigger problem…

Radiation fears after Japan blast
Radiation from Japan’s quake-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has reached harmful levels, the government says. Libyan Oil Buys Allies for Qaddafi
Elhadj Maiga is a Qaddafi recruiter and a proud one at that, scrambling to assemble a pipeline of young men from Mali to go and fight for The Great Leader. At this stage, without cash for guns or transport, Mr. Maiga’s group of about 200 young men is more of a fan club than a militia. But like other pro-Qaddafi groups that have sprung up here since the rebellion in Libya began, what it lacks in logistics it makes up in loyalty…

Bahrain’s King Declares Martial Law
Bahrain’s king declared martial law on Tuesday as his government struggled to quell an uprising by the island’s Shi’ite Muslim majority that has drawn in troops from fellow Sunni-ruled neighbour Saudi Arabia. An uneasy calm fell on Bahrain overnight, and a defence ministry statement suggested action against protesters camped out for weeks at Pearl roundabout could be swift. Forces may impose curfews, disperse gatherings…

Japan earthquake, tsunami, nuclear crisis could further Apple’s iPad 2 shortages
The Apple iPad 2 has been selling out in stores across the U.S. since its launch Friday, and the scarcity of the device will probably continue as Japan continues to recover from the earthquake and tsunami that struck the nation March 11 and as it tries to rein in an escalating nuclear crisis. Apple pushed the delivery time for those ordering the iPad 2 online to 4 to 5 weeks Thursday, the same day that the research firm IHS iSuppli…
