International Human Rights day on the 10th of December 2010 marks the 62nd anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Since the Sama Gazette is online and because Max Dana supports Every Human Has Rights (read more about the “60 Signers for the 60th Anniversary” Initiative) we never missed the date and this year, CIVICUS launches a new campaign: Barefoot Against Poverty.
About the campaign (more on official website):
This year, we’re trying to put Human Rights day on the map by building a community of people who will take a simple action on the day and throughout the year. 1.4 billion people are still living in extreme poverty, their right to a healthy living free from want being denied. By going barefoot against poverty, you are taking a first step for human rights – thinking about people who barely have food to put on their table, let alone shoes to put on their feet. The Barefoot campaign is coordinated by Every Human Has Rights but it’s a platform for anyone to use to help promote human rights issues. You can go barefoot for education, for peace, for the rights of indigenous people and much more.
CIVICUS will hold a celebration of Human Rights Day with the Malaika orphanage in Hillbrow. The orphanage works with under-privileged children in the area. The organization invites you to take action and to ‘become a barefoot warrior against poverty’ by signing the pledge: ‘Because I believe the fight against poverty begins with the fight for universal human rights, I will become a barefoot warrior against poverty on 10 December.’
We invite you to participate and to let us know if you do. At the Sama Gazette, we heard Max Dana was working on something: one of her character will become a barefoot warrior against poverty but for the moment, she didn’t reveal its identity yet… 😉
